CONDITION INFORMATION
Neuromuscular Disorders
Motor neuron disease (including ALS) and multiple sclerosis affect the nervous system in different ways. Both require diagnosis and management by appropriate specialists. Our clinic can discuss general health concerns and coordinate with a patient’s established neurology team; these conditions are not interchangeable and are not cured by supportive therapies.
Motor neuron disease and ALS
ALS affects nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement and can lead to progressive weakness, speech or swallowing changes, and breathing difficulties. Care typically involves a multidisciplinary specialist team, disease-specific medicines where appropriate, respiratory and nutrition support, and symptom management. New swallowing or breathing difficulty requires prompt medical attention.
NINDS: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms and course vary. Neurologists use examination and appropriate tests to diagnose MS and discuss disease-modifying treatment, relapse care, rehabilitation, and symptom support. Do not change prescribed MS treatment without the treating specialist.
NINDS: Multiple sclerosis Support and coordination
A supportive visit can review symptoms, medications, nutrition, sleep, mobility, and questions for the specialist team. It should complement—not replace—neurology care, rehabilitation, or urgent treatment for new or worsening neurological symptoms.
This page provides general health information, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Many of these conditions require specialist care. Do not stop or change prescribed treatment without speaking with your clinician.
